I retired from the military in 1982. Before 1955-57 each service member had a
file/service number (usually 7 digits service numbers for Navy enlisted: ex:
xxx-xx-xx, and 6 digits file numbers for officers: ex: xxxxxx).

Somewhere around 1955 to 1957 they discontinued the file/service numbers an
issued each member a SSN.

I don't think using a SSN before 1955-57 for locating a military file would
work. Try locating a VA office near you and requesting an E-mail address for
the service center for that military service. Send them an E-mail asking the
necessary questions.
