Not sure about protocols in Brown Co. offices. They do have a new court records building--stuff you want isn't actually in the old courthouse anymore. It's back a block or two behind.

Have you been to the Edinburgh Public Library? They have a wonderful Indiana Room, and an extensive Brown Co. collection, including copies of Helen Reeves' family files. You may still want to get those official copies, but might get a lot of preliminary work done without going so far.
