Neil and others,
Here is a web site on which you will find an index and email addresses
for information about Civil War units from many different states.
For more information about your particular ancestor who served in the
Union write to:
Military Service Records NNCC
National Archives (GSA)
Washington, DC 20408
Ask for the NATF form 80 for military records, military pensions and
bounty land warrants. You must fill out a separate form for each of the
different types of records. Give as much information as possible on the
form. Researchers will conduct a search and if nothing is found there
will be no charge. If information is found it will be sent to you and a
small fee will be charged.(I believe it was $10 a few years ago)
If you need records for someone that served in the Confederate Army you
must apply to the state they served for, ie Kentucky, Tennessee.
I have received information on ancestors that served as far back as the
Revolutionary War.
