Subject: [INCRAWFO] Speaking of incorrect information....

Good Morning All:
I noticed the discussion regarding incorrect information on tombstones and I
wanted to chime in about incorrect information that circulates among fellow
genealogists and relatives.

I recently heard from an unknown cousin found from posting on the Crawford
County GenWeb board. We have exchanged information and mailed information
back and forth. She recently sent a family tree with several generations of
my side of the Miller (the family tie we share) family she found at the
Crawford Co. Library in English. There were so many errors, in names, dates,
etc. I was very surprised. I was guessing that who ever filed the
information was misinformed on that side of the Miller family. However, just
last week....

Going to the local Family History Library, I rented "Genealogical notes on
families of Crawford County Indiana" Author-Tucker, Mack. I think there were
a total of 4 reels. On the first reel there were mostly articles of very
early history of Crawford Co. from it's very early start. This information
came from old newspaper articles, etc. The following reels were "family
trees" for the most part they were just the names, much of it without dates
and mostly handwritten. Some of the information had been crossed out,
written over, etc. Looking over many of the families I'm related to, there
were glaring mistakes! And if this information is in the Crawford Co.
Library and have been used by people for their family history and passed
along, well!!! I can only say, I hope they are going to other sources and
checking their facts.
In many cases there were wrong names of spouses, children that did not
exist, etc. I'm wondering how to correct this? Should I write to the library
and ask them to remove the incorrect information if I provide the correct
family history with supporting documents? In the case of my Gr. Gr.
Grandparents Miller I have a copy of their marriage license and census
records with the names of their children. What do you all think?
