Julie:
Back in May on the Crawford County, IN board there was the following post:
1)"Looking for the parents of Spicey Moore, born 1847 Crawford and sister
Martha, born Sept., 1850.Crawford...grandmother, Sarah Moore, born VA" This
was posted by Michelle Tharp
2) Doris Leistner replied:
"The Crawford Co. IN 1850 census, Sterling Twp., HH #341 shows a Jeremiah
Moor, age 56, b. VA. Included in this household are Elizabeth Moore, age 4,
Spicy, age 3, and Martha age 9 mo (indicating she was born ca Dec 1849
because the census enumeration was in August 1850).
According to Crawford Co. Guardianship Records, 18 Feb 1857, Houston Miller
was appointed guardian of Elizabeth, Martha, James, Spica, and Robert Moore,
minor heirs of Jeremiah Moore. On the same date Houston Miller was appointed
guardian of William, John, and Polly Moore, minor heirs of Martin Moore (and
legal heirs of Jeremiah Moore, deceased).
Martin Moore married Sarah Jane Toney, 28 Apr 1842 by Jno. Wood, JP
(Crawford Co. Marriage Book A, p. 276)"
3)**The reason this caught my attention, I had been doing a search on the
board for MILLER. Houston Miller,Sr. (I'm guessing it was Sr. and not Jr.)
was my GR,GR,GR Grandfather.I posted a message asking Doris if she knew
anything about how these guardianships were assigned.
4)Michelle Tharp posted this before Doris replied:
"This info is really interesting!! Especially since Crawford County
responded that there was no will or probate (any info) for Jeremiah
Moore....since my posting I have tracked our
Eliza Jane King Gowens/McGowen: ELiza Jane King married Jackson
Gammon/Gowens/McGowen, had son John, widowed...then married Jeremiah
Moore....she was definitely the mother of our Robert Stone Moore, James, and
Elizabeth.......Eliza, Robert, James, Elizabeth, Martha and Spicey are found
in 1860 Pike County along with John McGowens....with so many Moores, I found
them in 1850 Crawford because of the unusual name Spicey, and John
Gowens.....Elizabeth is still living with Robert when he marries and is
named as "sister"
in 1880 census, Gibson.....Jeremiah's sons, Almarine and Harrell Moore I
found in 1860 Knox with tons of Harrells and then in 1870, Harrell Moore is
livng next door to Eliza Jane King Gowens Moore and all the kids in Pike
County....!!
With this tracking, I was finally able to pin down the name of Robert Stone
Moore's father, Jeremiah......
Jeremiah Moore>>Robert Stone Moore + Alice Coonrod>>Prentice Moore+Mamie
Catt>>Mattie Moore+Livingston>>>my mother
I plan to send for the guardianship papers, but have no clue as to why there
was a guardian named......except in another family case, the older father
named a guardian(a long time neighbor and friend)to aid the much younger
wife and underaged children......
PS we had "assumed" that Martha and Spicey were also the children of Eliza
Jane and Jeremiah....
If you know there is in fact, a will and/or probate file for Jeremiah, I
would greatly appreciate knowing!!"
5)Doris L. posted this in answer to both our questions:
"In answer to your question ca my source of the Crawford Co. IN Guardianship
Records --
In Dec 1973, I abstracted the records of these two books in the Crawford Co.
Clerk's Office at that time:
(1) Crawford Co. IN Probate Court - Guardians Bond & Oath - Bk A, 14 Nov
1848 - 12 Aug 1852
(2) Guardians Bonds, Oaths and Letters - No. 1 - Probate -2 Aug 1853-11 Apr
1896 - Crawford Co. Court of Common Pleas.
The records of the Moore children were listed in the above Bk 1, pp. 22-23.
I assume those books are still in the County Clerk's Office. I have many
records of Crawford Co. and Perry Co. which I can search in my personal
library.
Glad I was able to help with your family query.
"
6)Michelle Thrap then posted:
Thanks so much for the info.....I finally have the legal proof that Jeremiah
was the father of our Robert Stone Moore!! We knew Eliza jane King, etc. was
.......I'll write to Crawford and get the copies...thanks!!! Such a surprise
after being advised there was not a will or probate file for Jeremiah..."
I decided to posted this on the list rather than e-mail to you directly, so
this message will be archived for future Moore researchers. Since the board
is not very active, I hope the others will forgive me!
Thank You,
Carole V. Beringer
