The Daviess County Democrat, Washington, Indiana, April 5, 1879, page 4:

"ATTEMPT TO BREAK JAIL

{John} HUNTER and {Joseph} CLENDENING, indicted for the murder of Hi WYKOFF and imprisoned in the county jail, attempted to escape by cutting their way through the floor of their cells on Sunday and Monday. They were in separate cells at first. HUNTER was at first discovered making the attempt, and he was removed to CLENDENING's cell, where a similar attempt was made and again discovered. The jail, being considered insecure, the prisoners were, by telegraphic order of Judge MALLOTT, removed to the Martin county jail."
