Message Board Post:
Am seeking information on the Lemming/Leming family that was in Dearborn County before 1830.
My ancestor, Nathaniel Lemming, was born in 1800 in New Jersey and died 1847 in Warren County, IN. He had one known brother, EPHRAIM LEMMING, who was born in 1819, exact place of birth unknown. Ephraim Lemming also settled in Warren Co., IN.
Noting the wide gap in years of Nathaniel's birth and Ephraim's birth, there must have been other siblings. I am trying to determine if the Leming's that were in Dearborn county might have been some of their siblings.
One possible relation could have been Thomas Leming, whose daughter, Sarah Jane, married John Jackson. A son of Nathaniel Lemming, Joel Lemming, was found living in the household of John and Sarah Jackson in the 1860 Dearborn Co. census.
The name Merritt Lemming is also found in both the Dearborn County Lemming's and in Nathaniel Lemming's line - Nathaniel's son Thomas named one of his son's Marritt/Merritt.
Nathaniel Lemming married JANE McGAHAN, daughter of THOMAS McGAHAN, also of Dearborn Co., abt. 1825 - exact marriage date has not been found. Both Nathaniel Lemming and Thomas McGahan were in Warren Co., IN before 1830.
Children of Nathaniel Lemming and Jane McGahan were:
Lathena b. 1826
John b. 1827
Thomas b. 1829
Wesley b. 1831
Juliette b. 1833 (my ancestor)
Rachel b. 1834
Joel b. 1836
Perry b. 1838
Amanda b. 1840
Ephraim b. 1843
This family has been a real challenge and any information will be greatly appreciated!
