Don,

My Howard family is from Rising Sun, Indiana. My g-g-gf was John W. Howard who married Margaret Sheridan on Feb. 27, 1843, in Rising Sun. I know quite a bit about the Sheridan side of my family, but have been at a loss regarding the Howard side.

I am always looking for info on the internet and came across the Lawrenceburg Public Library District that had a listing of current family histories for Dearborn County families. My Howards were not among them. The library genealogist referred me to the Ohio County Public Library in Rising Sun and this archivist sent me a copy of the 1850 census for the John W. Howard family and the Levi Howard family, noting that they lived houses apart and may be related....Levi perhaps being John's father or uncle. On this census is where I found the listing of Levi and Rebecca's children.

I am assuming Levi is John's dad. I also have a copy of the Rising Sun City Directory for 1859-1860. The page I copied lists four Howards -- James, Jefferson, John W. and Levi (listed as wid. Levi) as his wife was alive and widowed. Jefferson and John W. were boatmen on the Ohio River, James was a printer and of course, at that time, Levi had died.

So far, that is all I know regarding the John W. Howard family. Thank you for the info on Rebecca Buoy Howard. Have you done more research regarding the Levi Howard side that you would be willing to share?

Interesting note: John W. and Margaret had nine children. One son was Asbury and one daughter was Rebecca. Seems back then, they named children after family members.

Gloria
