My family is from this regoin as well and I run into the same situation. It seems that many people in the region would have spoken both languages. Mine were all born during French rule but show up later listed as being from Germany. I figure we could chalk some of it up to German being the language that they spoke here and the census taker not even asking after 300 or so households, especially if he didn't speak the language.
