He may have been serving with the Indian military training team in Ethiopia.

Haile Selassie was so impressed by the Indians when they liberated his
country in 1940-41 that he asked the GOI to help establish the Ethiopian
military academy.

Correct, IIRC since he was a serving member of the Indian Army in Ethiopia
at
the time, he received a state funeral. Unfortunately I do not know when HH
Raja
Bhartendra Singh passed away.
