Hello All,
I found I have another ancestor with India connections.
Maybe someone else 'out there' has a link to this family.

Francis James Mortimer was a Colonel, Royal Artilliary and late
Inspector-Gen of Ordinance Madras 1840-1904 son of Roger Mortimer and
Lucy <?) of Eastbourne.
I do not know who he married.
There is a memorial brass to him inside St. Mary's Church Eastbourne.

His son was Brig. Philip 1882 - who served in thr Great War the Afgan
War and the Waziristan campaign 1920-22. Where is Waziristan I wonder?
Family stories always claimed they had links to 'Earls of March' but
though I traced the family to the 16th cent and a Sir John Mortimer of
Crediton Devon I found no such links. Francis Mortimer has "Esq" after
his name - this used to denote that they could use a coat of arms, but
later on, (in my memory even!) many folk were addressed in this way.
Any clues about when "Esq" became used by more every-day folk would be
most
useful!
Cheers from Di Allen
