My grandfather was also in the Police in the state of Madras (1918ish) and
I found mentions of his rank etc. in the relevant years of the INDIA LIST
and INDIA OFFICE LIST at the India Office Library.

I also see, in Ian Baxter's, "Guide to Biographical Sources" of the IOL, that:
"Prior to 1893 appointments to all senior grades [of the Indian Police] were
made locally in India, and a record of the appointment may appear in the
Proceedings (P) of the relevant province. From 1893 most new entrants to
the top echelon were appointed by examination or selection in the UK. For
the appointment papers, 1893-1923, see L/PJ/6; 1924-1940, L/SG/6. The
agreements made on appointment between probationers and the Secretary of
State, 1893-1937, are to be found in 0/1/164-95, indexes Z/0/1/3-4."
