Larry,

If you ancestor was a lieutenant in the British Army, he will be
recorded in the Annual Army Lists (1754-1879). These are arranged by
regiment, but they are indexed from 1766 onwards. They should be
available from most national libraries. Failing that, there are copies
available in the Public Record Office in Kew (London). A few of the
Annual Army Lists have been microfilmed by the LDS (Mormons).
