It is located on a bend in the Ganges south of Varanasi (Benares) and
east of Mirzapur.

If, like me, you have as yet not been able to find a suitably historic
map, you may want to pick up an easy-to-read modern one with index. At
present I am using "India & Bangladesh" from the travel atlas series by
Lonely Planet. It's not perfect but it's a pretty good start. I found it
in a local book store, but I believe Lonely Planet now has a Web site. I
haven't yet seen anything equivalent for Pakistan but presume it will
turn up one of these days
