To answer your question I think I had beter quote from the message Sylvia Murphy sent me when I
asked the same question.

"Thacker Spink was/is a Calcutta publisher. The original directory was
called Thackers Bengal Directory and covered people & organisations in
Bengal only. (There were other directories by other publishers for the
Bombay and Madras presidencies). However, from about 1884 it became
Thackers Indian Directory and covered all three presidencies, and
consequently became an even thicker tome than previously. (Fortunately
they started printing it on thinner paper or it would run to several
volumes)."

I found my greatgrandfather, who was in the Punjab in 1881, 1883 and 1884 issues.

I had a quick trip to the NSW State Library last Thursday, after all I am currently in work
that is two blocks away, looking for an answer for somebody else - without success.
Whilst there I did what Sylvia Murphy recommended and visited the Family History
Section. I noticed that a lot of the Military History books where in that section rather
than in the main part. I will have to return now for two reasons!

All the best with your research.

William
