Have just come across this in Rousselet's "India & Its Native Princes"
1882(the list is going to get sick of me quoting from this ....)
"The extremity of the Bombay harbour goes on narrowing itself among the
islands until the sea ....... forms the Tannah River which separates the
island of Salsette from the continent"
"The passage from Elephanta to Tannah, the principal island of Salsette, is
about 15 or 16 miles & took us nearly 3 hours" ......... "The town with its
lofty Indian houses and its massive prison reflected in the water produces a
very fine effect"
... and he goes on to give some of the history of the place which was of
"very considerable importance at the time of the occupation of the island by
the Portuguese; during their long dominion it became the capital of this
colony" ........
"Tannah itself is still at thge present day (which would be 1864, sm) a
very fine large town, containing some 20,000 souls. There is nothing
curious to see at Tannah except perhaps the prison, which contains a great
number of inmates, and where very beautiful cotton stuffs, highly valued at
Bombay and in the province, are produced."
I haven't come across mention of Chimboor or Singhur yet, but if I do so,
will send a posting.
