Esther,

Thank you for your explanation, which lends credit to one of the
possible etymologies of the word "topas". In French topas were
sometimes called "gens à chapeau" (people wearing a hat). But the
possibility that the latter expression came secondarily, by confusion
with the Hindi or Tamil word for "hat", can't be ruled out.
