Subject: Re: Badges to Recognise Fellow Members?

Good plan, and I admit I thought much the same when I went last Saturday
(my first time - very daunting! :-)

However, some may feel somewhat foolish wearing a badge, not to mention
that one might well get kicked out for going around looking at everyone's
chest to see if they have a badge on!

So how'sabout this as a suggestion: if you don't object to being hassled by
other INDIA- subscribers, plonk a simple bit of paper on your desk (make it
nice and big so's people wandering past can see), with the word "INDIA-L"
clearly writ large upon on it?

Think I'll put "INDIA-L Newbie" on mine :-)

I intend to be going in about every other Saturday, and sharing with people
the best ways to make searches would I am sure make things much easier.
And people looking up similar things could, I am sure, cut down on
duplication.

F'rinsance, I was reading through all BMD indexes for the letter "H", and
would gladly have kept an eye out for other names on my way through. (Going
from these indexes, it appears that the alphabet was invented in 1910, and
the typewriter in 1940. Unfortunately, my ancestors were mostly dead by
then.)

But I think that just knowing there are other people there doing the same
thing would in general make it a lot less daunting. And it's a great excuse
to get together for a quiet drink somewhere when the library closes, of
course (are there any good places to chat and drink nearby?)

Speaking of the library closing, do you reckon if we hassled them for long
enough we could talk them into staying open 24 hours, for, say, one day a
month? I am sure this would be invaluable to people who can only stay in
the UK for a single weekend. 9 to 5 just isn't long enough.

-Dewi, looking for HESSING of Agra and Calcutta.
(Though, given the records are all handwritten, I'm also keeping an eye out
for Heming, Herring, Henning, and even Fleming...)
