Some months ago on INDIA-L I sought information about Johann Konrad
HILLER, my g-g-grandfather, who was a missionary in SW India at a place
then (in 1838-52) called Bettighery. Several INDIA-L members helped me to
locate this place, now spelled Betigeri (near Gadag). For this help I am
most appreciative.

Through working the Web I have been able to locate the mission
organization with which he worked and which still exists--the Basler
Mission at Basel, Switzerland. Their archive has a file on him.
According to this file, he decided in 1852 to leave India with his
family (wife and 4 children) and go to America.

According to further information which I have just received from the
Basel Mission archives, while on the passage in 1852 from India to
London, his wife suffered a miscarriage at sea on 18 July and became
seriously ill. She survived the journey and when the ship arrived in
England on 10 August she was taken to a hospital in London and recovered
well. Later this same year (exact date uncertain) this family arrived
in America, probably through the port of New York.

With these dates, would it be possible to learn the name of the ship on
which this family traveled to London from India? At this time would a
ship dock directly at a London dock? Would it be reasonable to assume
that this was a ship in the service of the British East India Company?

I have posted a request similar to this on TheShipsList-L but got no
response. From what I know about INDIA-L, there is probably someone
among us who can help me with this. Even a partial answer will be
most appreciated.
