Dear India group members,

Have any of you come across General John CARPENDALE, who was Governor of
the Mint in Madras some time in the 19th Century?

Not strictly family history, but... I've just come back from a couple of
weeks working in Andhra Pradesh, and spent a pleasantly cool night in the
Forestry Dept. rest house in Horsley (Horsly?) Hills. This little hill
station is not mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide to India, so is
definitely off the tourist tracks. It's roughly between Chittoor and
Cuddapah. My Indian colleagues thought it was founded by a Brit called
Horsley, but didn't know anything else. Do any of you know if there was
such a person, and, if so, why the hill station (alt. 3,700 ft) is named
after him?

Best wishes to all.
