This is an interesting list of newspaper editions available at Colindale, as
posted by Jill:

<SNIP>
because it does not entirely correspond with what I understood to have
been filmed. I'm not sure that I ever did get round to posting a list of
films that are available at Sydney University Library - but I think that the
set we have here originated at Colindale, and unfortunately cuts out at the
end of 1879 before starting again 1911 (Jill - could 1889 above possibly be
a typo???) Anyway, the series here is more broken, according to the on-line
catalogue:
1860-1880; 1911-1915; 1921-1922; 1924-1925; 1932-1935; 1944-1960; 1967-1989,
and then from 1990-1995 ....

The forerunner of 'The Times of India' was "The Bombay Times" and I think we
have that back to 1848.

There are a number of other old Indian newspapers on film in the
audio-visual room; which I haven't been able to bring up on the on-line
catalogue. Although my intention is to make a proper listing of holdings (&
include it on a web page) - my time at Sydney Uni Library is rare and
precious, so despite these good intentions, I usually either get delving
into the books and/or actually looking at the films of the newspapers.

This last weekend I was enjoying the Imperial Gazeteer of India in several
volumes, published in 1886 and a 1903 edition; not to mention Mrs F Penny's
book with the old Fort St George/St Marys Church cemetary listings.

>1839 (one copy)
>Dec 1841 (a few)

I shall certainly have to re-check these as wasn't aware that any of our
holdings go back as early as 1814, however, we do have a longer run of
Bombay Gazette which fills in some of the gaps from Times of India.

What is needed though are some old newspapers from Bengal and Madras - maybe
Jill or someone else knows if anything has been filmed. Certainly there
was a very wide range of print media available to Europeans in India. As
an example, an advertisement for "The Exchange Rooms" Church Gate St, Fort,
Bombay appeared in the T of I on 2/2/1863 which included an extensive list
of journals from countries around the world filed for reference etc ... I
will list some of the Indian publications ......
