Alan,
There were indeed Madras Engineers but you must bear in mind that they
were:-
1. A Corps and not a Regiment
2. An all officer Corps
All enlisted men at this time joined the 'Madras Sappers & Miners', as would
be the case with the British Army, it was not until 1859 that the Royal
Engineers replaced the Royal Sappers & Miners and the unified corps was
formed.
So the answer is, Madras European Regiment!

Subject: MEANING OF "ME" REGIMENT
>When I first joined INDIA-L, the limit of my confirmed knowledge of Indian
based ancestry was the knowledge that my ggrandfather had been babtised in
Nagpore as the son of Joseph BRIERLY, Serjeant (sic) "ME" Regiment and his
wife Charlotte in 1832.
>
>Cathy Day was kind enough to advise me that ME stood for Madras European
Regiment and I have no reason to doubt her. Several variations of the
spelling of the name Brierly in records have resulted in the belief that
most reliable and probability the one to settle on was that he was the son
of a Joseph and Charlotte BREARLEY of that Regiment and for whom records do
exist.
>
>However, to finally settle the issue in my own mind I do have a question to
ask. It is based on an observation I have made in shipping passenger lists
that are sometimes posted there was obviously a "group" for want of a better
word called the Madras Engineers, initials 'ME' if you see my drift. Where
they a REGIMENT?
>
>My uncertainty to wholly accept the Madras European Regiment theory at the
moment is because my ggrandfather on arrival in Australia gave his
occupation as 'Surveyor'. Sons often followed their father's occupation,
and appropriate place for a surveyor in the HEICA would seem to be in
Engineering (Regiment?). This leads me back to inquiring whether ME
Regiment did also stand for Madras Engineers (Regiment).
