Subject: ARMENIAN NAMES

Talking about Armenian names, Jill, there are a whole host I am sure but in
addition to Carapiet certain others come to mind such as Aaratoon - I
remember my sister June Griffiin speaking of Yerchanik (SP?) Aaratoon in La
Martiniere, Calcutta. I always liked the sound of the name! In addition, I
remember Mackertich (Grace, are you there somewhere. I remember you as being
in Pratt School, Calcutta - the link is Bishop Cotton's, Nagpur!). My
brother-in-law who is probably a mixture of Armenian and Anglo-Indian is also
a Mackertich - lives now in Melbourne, Australia.
Couldn't resist the anecdotes. Sorry Jill! ... Talking of Carapiet, I don't
remember the lady's first name but a Mrs. Carapiet was instrumental in
providing lunch for the secretaries in Imperial Tobacco (afterwards India
Tobacco) of India Limited, Calcutta - both at the Head Office and the branch
office. I still can taste the deliciously rich Armenian pulao (more like a
biryani) that was served on high days and holidays! This may be the same
lady who someone on India Roots Web said lived in or around Chowringhee Road,
Calcutta.

There were quite a few Armenians in La Martiniere Boys School, Calcutta, and
the OMA would probably have a clue as to names. This is the newsletter put
out by the Old Martinian Association in Perth. If interested I'll dig up a
copy hopefully, and see if they have an e-mail address.
Sincerely,
Dorothy
