I was told to recommend a book by Correlli Barnett to another email writer
"Britain and her Army 1509-1970" - and a really good read it is I have to
say, even to one totally uninterested in the military such as I. There is an
Napoleonic wars cartoon by Rowlandson of woman carrying baggage and babies
across the river in an army train. Barnett says a poportion of the regimental
wives marched with their husbands to provide what nursing services there
werre - the custom gradually died out in the 19c when proper medical services
were created. By the figures, it looked as if they provide a lot more than
just nursing!
So I imagine they travelled to India as well.
