I am working together with an Australian Researcher interested in MARITIME/COMMERCIAL Histories. We are seeking the relevance and relations of Family History to Studies of Commerce in and out of INDIA from the 1760s.
Many of you will be aware that since I found my family were names of the original Founders, 1811, of Forbes & Co, Bombay ( surnames Inglis, Forbes, Money) it has become increasingly obvious that many India families( especially descended from HEIC and shipping families) were/are inter-related in terms of backgrounds, in the UK.
Very often business operations were conducted by family members, even those who may also have had connections in Military Establishments, and were forming major Commercial and Trading Partnerships. These 18th and 19th century operations, extended as well as to China, far into the Southern Hemisphere of Australasia and the Pacific.
For the purpose of this exercise we have to process much information, and end up with extra people and implications to consider in our Family Histories!
Here as just one example, we find that by the 1830s., a neice of the wife of British Prime Minister GLADSTONE who also had a family commercial interest in West Indies Trade, had married into the LARKINS family of Blackheath, London. To sort this out, we lack information on the family of PM Gladstone's wife. We hope to tie such information to the noted LARKINS, Shipbuilders and East India Co Traders of Thames, London., who were later reputed to be shipbuilding and trading out of Calcutta..
Larkins, as found in London , were it seems, respected in East India company circles , and were dealing to India from the 1780s or even earlier.
I shall be most gratefull for any help, no matter how small, with names and information which may assist our exciting project !
If you prefer , please contact me direct.
Many thanks...Patricia.
