We used to often go to Gopalpur on holiday during the 1940's and stayed at a
guest house called "Blue Haven," run by a Mrs. Moore. There was also the
"Waverley Hotel" run by a Mr. and Mrs. Parker, and of course the Oberoi "Palm
Beach." The fishermen who used to take us sea-bathing, were always helpful
and had names like "Bombay Boy." The beaches were marvellous, but the sea
was always a bit rough, and sloped quite sharply to the sea. Sadly when I
went back to Gopalpur in the late 1960's a lot of the houses bordering the
beach had been half-washed away, and were in ruins, including "Blue Haven."
Further into the town was "Yatton Hall" which, if I remember correctly, was
some sort of club, and they used to serve the most delicious lime-juice
cordial that I have ever tasted.
