I have recently been researching the old staff records of the CSR regarding
my maternal grandfather who worked for the CSR in Fiji from 1903 to
1909. He left and returned in 1913, leasing his own sugar plantation from
the CSR.

Indian laborers was not the subject of my inquiries so forgive the lack of
detail in this posting. While researching it became clear that Indians had
been recruited to Fiji as indentured laborers, not as slaves and a reason
able percentage returned home. Part of the CSR's labor problems in Fiji
were caused be the refusal of authorities in India the early 1800 to
continue the practice together with the refusal of those who stayed to work
under the conditions they had been working under when indentured. There
was a laborers general strike I believe in 1921 regarding this.

If anyone is interested I can certainly research this matter further.
