Hi Listers,

Sometime back someone with a Keatinge connection posted a query about
a Hope-Johnston. An Alma Keatinge had married a Mr. Hope-Johnstone
around 1920. I have lost the original e-mail in the black hole but
still have the notes I made.

Hope and Johnston are both names into which my Laidlay family married
so I keep an eye out for these names.

A Captain Hope-Johnson (no "t" in name - but this could be
mis-spelling) shows up as Secretary of the Gezirah Club in Egypt.
The Gezirah Club has an interesting history which can be found at
http://www.egy.com/landmarks/96-02-10.shtml

The mention of Captain Hope-Johnson is as follows:

"Percy F. Martin's Egypt - Old and New (London, 1923) relates how the
Gezirah Sporting Club of which Captain Hope-Johnson has been, for
some years, the very popular and enterprising secretary is reached in
about ten minutes by carriage from either the Continental or
Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo...."

Hope this is of some help to the person searching the Keatinge
family.

I am interested in the above as one of my Laidlay family - John E.
Laidlay, famous golfer of the late 1800's is reputed to have designed
the first golf course in Egypt. As the Gezirah Club claims the
first golf course I have concluded that John E. Laidlay must have
designed their course. I suspect that Captain Hope-Johnston may
have been a relative but as yet cannot prove this.

Pat
