Please don't send it just to the newbies - let us all know - I've been a
member of the list for a few months now, but am still relatively new to
genealogy and haven't yet managed to compile an abbreviations list, and get
totally confused with what they all mean!
Thanks

I applaude Rex's suggestion to catalogue abbreviations for the help
of people new to genealogical research.
Perhaps he or another lister would consider collating all of them
and then I would faciilitate the distribution to new listers.
I could start the list off for him with the index of abbreviations
contained in my Who's Who which alone contains
over 1,160 abbreviations used in Genealogical research.
It might well be that a 30 second search of a dictionary or use of a
search engine to find information for beginners might also suffice.
Regards

Dear Listers
Thank you, all you experienced genealogists, for your contributions in
explaining relict, relich, relick - perhaps also relinquished! The context
was in Bengal Burials where a female's Christian name is listed (for
example) Mary, followed by the Surname (for example) Smith in the respective
column and in the column Quality, Trade or Profession, &c, &c. is listed
'Relict of John Smith'.
May I suggest to the List Administrator, that in the Welcoming Letter to a
new subscriber and perhaps also a newcomer to genealogy, that the letter
contain a section headed: Useful Abbreviations and Phrases, with entries
(obviously known to experienced genealogists) like
BMD= Birth, Marriages, Deaths (I presume)
MI=Monumental Inscriptions
DOB= Date of Birth
SoG=Society of Genealogists
relict=widow (but see etymology)
Are there many more?
Alternatively, or in addition, a monthly updated letter containing these can
be emailed.
Thanks
Rex Agacy
