There is an Ice House in Madras which must be a hundred years old. It is
still called the Ice House but I don't know what they are using it for. We
used to get ice delivered in the 40's and my mother would have it put in an
Ice Box to keep things cool. It came in big chunks, several pounds
weight--we never used it in drinks that I remember. I think people thought
you would catch a cold! We would never drink unboiled water, anyway, and ice
would not be made from boiled water. I think originally the ice came by ship
and was housed in the Ice House but then they started to make the ice there
but I was very young at the time and the mechanics didn't interest me--just
the carts and the ice! Joy
