All this talk of Ice and ice houses, brings to mind a photo in our possession. It was taken in the 1930's and shows my husbands father in very relaxed mode travelling by train from Bombay to Calcutta , cigarette in hand, looking very cool. What the camera does not show is that his feet are resting in a big bucket of ice. This was apparently the only way to do the trip and survive the heat.
