Dear Aubry,
Port Blair is the headquarters of the present day Union Territory of Andaman
and Nicobar Islands which comprises 572 islands, islets and rocks, of which
only 38 are inhabited. These Islands form a 700 km stretch from North to
South, resembling a broken arc. Situated in the Bay of Bengal, the islands
are 1200 km from the mainland.
Ships sail from Calcutta every 10 days and from Visakhapatnam once in 3
months. Many private sailing boats are available from Calcutta and Chennai.
Jet Airways operates everyday, Alliance Air operates flights four days a
week and Indian Airlines thrice weekly from Calcutta.
Port Blair was famous for deporting mainland India prisoners in the world
famous Cellular Jails during British Raj, popularly known in Hindi as "Kala
Pani". Even today the Cellular Jails are visited as a tourist spot. Many of
the Gandhian freedom fighters were locked in the Port Blair Jail.

With best wishes
Vijay Shukla
