John:
English Birth, Death & Marriage Indices for Overseas events
include Births, Deaths & Marriages for Army personnel.
They are described on the Office of National Statistics,
General Registry Office (ONS, GRO) website:
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/registration/default.asp
then go to "Overseas"
The original Indices are in the Family Record Centre, London (FRC),
and are avaliable on fiche (with F.... numbers). There is a set here in the
National Library, Wellington.
To order "misc" or "overseas" certificates from the English ONS GRO,
there is a special light blue "overseas events" order form from the FRC or
Family Research Centre. You can view the form on their website but not
download it. But you can order by letter, see reply from ONS, GRO
below. See the suggestion in their reply that births sometimes appeared
several times (often twice, and up to five times!) to get extra pay!
While you do not need to give the fiche number, ensure that you specify
the Index; ie Chaplains, Regimental, Regimental Supplementary or Ionian
Islands. Many of the Regimental births are in England, not overseas.
Yours, John Wilson (Wellington, New Zealand)
