Season : September to mid-June.
The best time to visit is September to May.
The temperature vary from 16 degree Celsius in winter to 35 deg Celsius
in summer.
The popular season to visit Panchgani is the summer. It is a pleasant
change from the scorching sun in the neighboring cities Mumbai, Pune
and Kolhapur. In summer the early morning cool breeze mixed with the
warm sun throughout the clear day is a rich mixture of the elements
that invigorates the soul. The quiet serenity of the valley and the
green forests bathing in the gentle sunshine is a heavenly vision. The
evening brings with it a subtle change in the temperature and opens up
the grand nocturnal show of the galaxies. The clear starlit sky is a
sight that challenges ones imagination. The nightlife in Panchgani
regales in the cool winds that blow through the hills.
For the nature lover the most romantic and spectacular of all seasons
is the monsoons. Commencement of the monsoon is usually preceded by
thunder squalls, which give various warnings of its arrival. In the
early and middle part of the day, the air is found to be still and
sultry. Dense and dark clouds begin gathering from the south - eastern
side. The stillness is broken by loud thunder and strong gusts of wind
from the same quarter of the horizon. The clouds rapidly thicken as
they advance and at length discharge their surcharged moisture in a
heavy torrent of rain amidst the most beautiful, romantic and vivid
lightening and roars of thunder which reverberate from mountain to
mountain, with a grand and terrific effect. This is followed with clear
morning weather with its delicious freshness in the atmosphere, which
so invariably follows a fall of rain in these hills. The mists rapidly
thicken and close the view on every side. The monsoon sets in with
thick drizzling rain, which continues with few interruptions during the
rest of the month. The hills during the month of July and August are
enveloped in almost perpetual clouds and fog. The atmosphere is
supersaturated with moisture, which is precipitated with very little
interruption in the form of small, thick, drizzling rain varying at
short intervals with heavy drenching showers.
In September, the violence of the monsoon begins to subside. The wind
abates in strength, the fogs are much less dense & frequent and the
rainfall is reduced, the latter part of the month offers intermittent
rain with clear fine weather. The commencement of October may be
considered as the connecting link between the monsoon and the winter.
The weather during this month combines the good qualities of the
climate of both the seasons and is altogether the very romantic and
pleasant throughout the year. The temperature is cool and equable &
there is an agreeable freshness in the air, which is not experienced,
in the same degree in the European Spring. The winds are at this time
variable. As the month advances, the weather gradually assumes the most
steady & characteristic type of cold season; the scenery too is
rendered peculiarly attractive by the mingled lights and shadows of the
mists.

Panchgani has come a long way, from the time John Chesson ,a retird East
India Company Warrent officer selected it as an experimental site for a
european style health resort in 1860.Some of the cottege buildings
still exist and attract the tourists interested in period buildings.
In 1863 Panchgani was accorded the status of a Hill Sanatorium and
Chesson was appointed as its first magistrate and superintendent. The
popularity sheen hasn't dulled since.

Panchgani is on the way to Mahabaleshwar. Situated at an altitude of
1334 mts, it lies just 38 m below Mahabaleshwar. It gets name from the
five hills around it.

The way to Panchgani from Mahabaleshwar which is 18 kms is
absolutely spectacular. Krishna river meanders through the farms,
ravines and hamlets on one side and the coastal plains on the other
side has a mesmeric charm. Panchgani has been a retreat for a long
time.It has the ‘Raj’ stamp all over it, which is evident in the
architecture of Old British building. Parsi houses and the boarding
school which would be almost a century old.

It is delight to canter through thickly wooded Walkways (there
are numerous stables in Panchgani) to explore the area, catching its
way through the ravines, hundreds of meters below. Kamalgad Fort is
easily reached by foot or on horseback.

Horses are the best mode which will gently gallop you through the
thick, lush green trees, to the unmarked routes towards hidden lover's
routes, to the caves and the Kamalgad fort.. The bazaar is also a place
worth visiting. For long distances though taxis are available, bicycles
and horses are the best mode of transport.

>> Panchgani is famous for its numerous boarding schools.one of the
first things you notice as you drive into Panchgani, are the number of
schools that are tucked away inside the curves and turns of the hill
station.
It was the Englishmen, the Parsis, and the Bahai's who started the
premier Educational Institutes in Panchgani realising that children
would be much better off studing and learning in Panchgani than in the
cities around it. Good climate Plays an important role in the presence
of twenty-nine public schools in this hillstation.
They are run on the lines of English Public School.Anjuman-E-Islam
Public school, spread over an area of 168 acres of land,is the oldest
among the public schools followed by Kimmins,1898,St. Peters 1902,
St.joseph 1904. Christian Missionary Schools impart education under
Indian Certificate for secondary Education (ICSE) and others like New
Era, Billimoria, Bahai,Anjuman-E-Islam, Sanjeevan are under Central
Board for Secondary Education.
Most schools are co-eds, and some like Anjuman-e- Islam ,especially for
boys.while Kimmins is for girls. They are also heritage sructures since
some of the anglican institutes and church-funded schools have crossed
the century mark and are still going strong.
