Captain NEWTE must have had a lucky escape from the Granby, or, perhaps
there were two Granby's. The attached is an extract from one of my COOKSON
ancestors' diaries:

"February 1771 (about the latter end) my brother John (COOKSON) arrived from
Halifax on leave from Commodore Hood, on purpose to see his sister, myself
and Brother-in-law Mr Scott - he had not been with us long before he was
ordered to Boston to take the Command of the Granby Sloop (with money on
board for the Navy) and to proceed with her to Halifax - but alas! a heavy
gale came on just as she was approaching her Port, dashed her against the
rocks and every soul perished!!! Thus terminated the life of my brother
John, who was considered by all who knew him as most accomplished youth; "

This event occurred to my understanding in Mar or Apr 1771.
