I appeal for suggestions (not for the first time) from experienced (and imaginative) listers, to help me trace my great-grandmother's origins. I've tried without avail for over 20 years to find her maiden name. I apologise for the detail, so please read no further if you wish:
Facts:
a. Her death and burial in Darjeeling in 1898 are recorded in N/1/269/13, as 'Lilly Violet', 86 years, wife of R.C. McKennie. The age is incorrect, as she had children in 1883-1888.
b. The baptisms of her three children in 1883 (Darjeeling), Bankipore (1885), and Purulia (1888), record her first name as 'Lillyan', 'Lilyan', and 'Lillyan' respectively.
c. Her husband, my great-grandfather, Richard Cherry McKENNIE (1841-1906), was a civil engineer in the PWD.
Legend:
a. Before her marriage she lived with an uncle in London.
b. She eloped, and was 'cut off' by her family.
Research already made:
a. Marriages (c.1870-1898) in India (OIOC), Ireland (LDS), England & Wales (microfiches and Free BMDs), Scotland (origins website).
b. Births/baptisms c. 1862 in same sources.
c. Misc. 1881 Census; PWD files at OIOC; wills in England and India.
Any advice and suggestions will be much appreciated.
Best wishes,
Brian Duncan,
