Dear All,

I'm a bit frazzled and need some help! My ggg grandfather, Augustin
Greathead WILSON, was an apothecary in the Madras Medical Service. I believe
he was born in 1805, probably in England. He married Frances Maria WILLIAMS
in 1834 in Secunderabad. (He was a widower at this time). He died in 1873 in
Chudderghaut, I think.

Clearly, there are still so many things I would like to find out about him..
. where he was born; who his first wife was; where he qualified; where his
career took him etc etc.

Through the local FHC I ordered a film of "Madras Service Army Lists, 1760 -
1858. Medical Personnel, I - Z ". I can't find him there! However, I have
to say there is a wealth of biographical info on those men who are listed on
it. And so, time permitting, I'm happy to look up names on the film for
anybody. These men all appear to be Assistant or full Surgeons and in some
cases there is a page or two of info on them. If that is the case, you might
like a photocopy of the page to save the transcription. Anyway, write to me
off List with requests.

In the meantime, can anyone suggest where I might find similar Service info
on Apothecaries? I guess the Surgeons were commissioned officers and the
Apothecaries were non-commissioned, but I thought they would all have come
under the umbrella of the Madras Medical Personnel.

It's either feast or famine with these films. In our tiny FHC we seem to
wait for months for some films to arrive and then 2 or 3 arrive together! (I
m not really complaining though ... I know we're lucky to have the Centre
just down the road in little old Masterton! When I was visiting the UK last
year, the nearest FHC was miles away and you had to book a film reader a
long time ahead ... impossible on my visit). Well, back to the point ... the
other film is "Madras Army Muster Rolls 1844-1845 (A to O)". So I'm taking
requests for that one too .... but don't expect results in a hurry!

Good wishes

Hilda Payne
