Dear Julie and friends on list,

:-D On Thur 1 Jan 2004, Julie gave a perfect example
of how a message to India List, which will be
automatically archived, will entirely miss the
attention of someone later interested in her family.

So, I thought to "meself", wonder if anyone has a
handy teatowel to wrap around themselves while I try
and teach others how to such eggs ?????? :-D And
will Julie hate me for ever if I use her message as an
example to help others ?????

The subject box of email said "ancestors". And her
message read : "Thanks for that Info David, I have all
the birth certificates for the children born to HIM
during HIS marriage to my Great grandmother Kezia, and
to HIS second wife in this country Ada, and also HIS
marriage to Ada, but none give any ref. to HIS Army
career, it is only the death certificate that refers
to HIM as a army pensioner, a descendant of the last
marage contacted me some years ago with the little
info that he had, which was basically the same as my
father already knew, and that was that HE was a
sergeant in the British Army and served in the Punjab,
and that HE had married whilst out there.
The dates are wide I know but HE could have served
realistically any time between 1873 and 1888 i.e. 15
years, was this a standard length of service in those
days ? Thanks again for the info, and I shall contact
the museum ASAP. Julie"

My capitals for His, Him, He, etc. above.

No surname, not even a first name for the man
concerned. Yes, wives Kezia and Ada, but then a
future reader to our list might not know them.

Ah well ... time to put on my mapie hat to save my
head from brickbats ! (Magpie hat ??? Those of you
not familiar with Australia will snort with disbelief
to hear that our magpies will swoop and peck our heads
during the nesting season .. they do, honest). And a
Happy New Year to all on the list, with many good
wishes for your health and happiness,

Maria Suffolk
