Thanks, Michael. There was a skirmish at Ahmednuggur and he was registered
as having died at Ahmedabad which I think is close by. He was in charge of
the group. Below is what is on his military record:
.Left for Baruda 20th Inst. Gaz. 27 Nov 1834. The order by the Officer
comm. of. at Baruda dated 20th Feb last directing Major Morris to proceed to
Ahmednuggur and take command of the Field Detachment serving in the Myhee
Kaunta, confirmed. Mil. Cons. 25th March No.1229 & G.O. 19 June 1835.
Reports his having taken possession of the town of Ahmednuggur on the 3rd.
inst. Mil. Cons. 25th March 1835. On the 5th March last the detachment
under his command marched upon and totally destroyed the village of
Poormallee, reported to be one of the principal rendezvous of the Roopal
Rebels. Pol. Cons. 1st April No 776 & Mil Cons. 22nd April 1835. After the
dispersal of the Roopal Rebels operations were resumed against Soornz Mull,
one of the Insurgent Chieftains. by the field force under the command of
Major Morris, which on the 11th March 1835, arrived before Gorul, one of his
principal strongholds in the neighbourhood of Mondetha and took it and
dispersed the garrison. Soornz Mull had quitted the place, which was
defended by his brother Shire Sing, and about 200 or 250 Mukrances. Pol
Cons. 1st April no 753. Mil. Cons. 15th April No 1660 & Pol . letter from
Bombay 15th Oct 1835. Para. 7. The field force under his command advanced
30 miles into the hills in the vicinity of Edur where two towns of
importance were taken after a good deal of resistance on the part of the
Enemy. On the return of the Force, a large body of Bheels having lined the
Hills, a sharp engagement took place in which the Enemy lost, in killed &
wounded, above 360 men; 18 of the British troops were wounded on this
occasion. The Pol. Comr. for Guzerat regrets “to state that Major Morris’s
endeavours to seize Soornj Mule, although most promptly and skilfully
executed have not succeeded.” The Govr. In Council approves of his
proceedings. Cons 27th May 1835 No 1277.Died at Ahmedabad on the 13th April
1835.
Can you please tell me how to check the archives of the Times as this would
be great?
Many thanks.

Dear Dorothy,
Typically causes of death were recorded as follows:
Killed (in action)
Died of wounds
Died/Deceased
The last category covers everything not covered by the first two, which
usually meant disease. The Pay List will tell you if he was
hospitalised prior to his death, and when. If he appears to have been
present and doing duty right up to the day of his death, then I would
suspect cholera.
What was the battle? I can't think of any major battles in India in
1835.
Have you checked the digital archive of "The Times" for death notices
and/or obituaries? There might well be a clue as to the cause of death
there.
