Hello Melanie, For a start, go to Google and type in IRFCA. Indian Railways
Fan Club Assn. On the index click History and you will get an excellent
introduction to the history of Indian Railways.
It seems that the early engine drivers in my families, were indentured in
England, so obviously there was an element of recruitment - I haven't got to
that page in detail yet

Hello all,
I'm also wondering what was the procedure for people from England and Wales
who went to work for the railway in India? How were they recruited? Which
railway companies recruited in England and Wales? Or did they just go to
India and hope to sign up with a railway company there? Was it common for
recruits to India to start out working on the railway in England--or could
they be recruited to India without any experience? At the time of the
census, my ancestor, Richard Rees (Rhys) was sixteen years old. What sorts
of jobs could a sixteen year old do on the railroad? Was it common for a 16
year old to go to India to work? I'm trying to determine if in 1881 he was
in India or Wales.

I'm just trying to piece things together, and I really don't have any
information beyond this census note and a distant relative saying she
thought our ancestor might have worked for the railway in India.

Any suggestions or clarification of the British and/or Welsh working in
India on the railway and how they came to be there would be much
appreciated.

Thanks,

Melanie Tucker
