Noting the complete silence on this subject since my last message, I write a
short follow-up for the archive!
In the IOR this afternoon, I could not resist requesting the Receipt Books
for Dodington at the time of her loss. These may be found in L/MAR/B/619E
These are comprised two books:
a. Dodington's Impress Book 1754.
This is effectively a list of the crew in order of the date of payment, in
which they sign for two month's pay upon 'Impressment'. I imagine that this
means upon engagement for the voyage in questionand that they were not
'pressed' into service as were many colleagues for the King's Navy!
The List commences on 24 March 1755 and continues up to 5 April 1755. The
country of origin of each man is given, together with the function aboard of
all except Ordinary Seamen. Total 33 Souls.
b. Dodington's Absence - Lost 17 July 1755 off Cape Outward Bound
Alphabetical List of the crew giving payment due to each man for his
service (presumably up to 17.7.55 but amounting to one month), to whom it
was paid and the date of payment. Against a number of the men is noted:
"Saved - now on board the Caernarvon" (Total 68 Souls)
The List of those 'Saved' - alphabetically with comparison with Stewart
Green's List (given first) is:
Thos Arnold = Tho. Arnold (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
Robert Beazley = No mention (but a George Beazley appears in a.)
Neal Bothwell = Neill Bothwell Listed but no reference to being 'saved'
Gilbert Chain = Gilbert Chain Listed but no reference to being 'saved'
Nath'l. Chisholme = Nath'l. Chisholm (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
John Collett = John Collett Listed but no reference to being 'saved'.
Charles Cunningham = No mention
John McDugall (?) = No mention
John Glass = John Glass Listed but no reference to being 'saved'
Evan Jones = Evan Jones (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
John King = John King (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
Daniel Ladoux = Dan'l Lidoux (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
Leister = John Lester. Listed but no reference to being 'saved'
Jer. More = Jeremiah Moull (prob.) (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
Small Powell = Sam'l Powell (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
John Ray = No mention in either list.
Richard Topping = Rich'd. Topping (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
Peter Rosenbery = Peter Rosingburgh Listed but but no reference to being
'saved'
James Samson = Jas. Samson Listed but but no reference to being 'saved'
Henry Scance = Hendrick Scands (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
Henry Sharp = Hy. Sharp Listed but but no reference to being 'saved'
Smith = Christ'r Smith Listed but but no reference to being 'saved'
Johanes Taylor = Johannes Taylor (Saved, now on board Caernarvon)
