Walter David Thomas HACK, believed born Basingstoke 1860 (father,
William Hack); m. Poona 03/05/1882 (Bombay Police Constable; later -
1888: Inspector; circa 1900: Superintendent).
Georgina Rosamund Susan HACK, nee MENDEZ, b. Madras 13/01/1866 (father,
Robert Daniel Mendez, mother: Jane ?), m. Poona 03/05/1882
Having verified (thanks to Christopher Hewson), gg-papa's listing in
Thacker's Bombay Guide 1902, there's just a chance that my gg-parents
(above) were alive, retired but still living in India in 1925,. As
there was a falling out between my grandmother (Gladys Pansy Jane - b.
1888 Secunderabad) and her parents following her own marriage, I have
yet to discover where or when either of the latter died.
If they stayed in India and didn't die prematurely, Walter would have
been 65 in 1925 and Rosamund 44. Bombay would be an obvious location
for them, Madras another possibility, as is Secunderabad where
Rosamund's family may have settled at the time of her marriage (there's
a record - baptism or death? - of a Constance Faith W. MENDEZ in
Secunderabad in 1893, who may have been a maiden aunt, a sister,
sister-in-law or (if a baptism) a niece.
Also given gg-mama's Spanish or Portuguese parentage, it would be
interesting to know whether there were any, or many, MENDEZ listed in
Cochin in 1925 (it is believed there was some Jewish Iberian ancestry),
which would indicate another possible lead for research further back in
time, as well as in Madras and Secunderabad/Hyderabad.
SHAND & Co. was the company in Madras where 3g-papa, Robert Daniel
MENDEZ worked as a clerk at the time of Rosamund's birth. Would the
company name show up in Thacker's? Or perhaps a company chairman of
the same name.
Many thanks,
Diana
