Hi List,
Have deleted the person looking for SARUN. Then I remembered excellent research done for me by Rob Alexander in Thackers.
My great grandfather Frederick Crosley Laurie went to India in 1868.
His father William Charles Laurie was associated with HEIC [in London]. Business called TIRHOOT Co --from memory.
Thackers 1876/78/80/82/84/85/86 lists him as;
F.C. Laurie managing proprietor, NAWADA Indigo concern, SARUN.
Thackers 1888/92/94/96:
F.C. Laurie manager, BANSGHAT & DECKOLEE Indigo Concern,
NUSRUCK, Chupra, Sarun
Thackers 1898
F.C. Laurie asst. manager BETTIAH RAJ Estate, Chupra Circle,
SARUN
Thackers 1902/06/08/09:
F.C. Laurie managing proprietor NAWADA Indigo, Chupra SARUN
Believe he returned to Bournemouth about 1914/15, and died 2 years later considerably in debt.
Think this is an interesting look at the vagaries of the indigo business.
Forty six years in India. Any others on the list have indigo planters' tales to tell??
Warm regards to all on the India List. Kitty
