Dear Maureen, 'Write' as an occupation almost certainly means 'Writer'. The
term was in common use in a church centre where I worked in the 1960s here
in South India. It was simply the name/ profession for the person who wrote
(by hand) most of the letters. I expect the term is still in use in some
places!
