Hello Kay
Welcome to the List. You will find that listers are most helpful and have a
vast knowledge and experience in Family History.
"Am not sure if the double barrelled surname is an 'affectation' or even a
misspelling. "
In my case one of paternal great grand father's was given his mother's
maiden name as a Christian name - Eckron Pringle. I have only just
discovered it. A distant cousin of mine in New Zealand caught me on
Valmay's website and put 2 and 2 together. If not for her I would never
have known.
In my case, my other paternal grand father's name was Sarstedt and he later
adopted the name Sarstedt-McCarthy (too long a story to go into) with the
result that only my line has a double barrell surname.
I too have kept my surname Sarstedt-Hamilton as a double barrelled surname,
I go as Sarstedt-Hamilton. Firstly because I didn't want to lose my surname
and secondly because it makes it easier for Family History when people
searching know that I am a Sarstedt. We are no blood relation to McCarthy
so I don't carry it on. With females where we lose our surname, it becomes
very difficult.
Hope this give you another perspective on the subject.
