We have a great group of people here on this list, and I will not
tolerate an argument breaking out among our members. It does no one any
good, and is counter productive.
I am not pointing my finger at any one person here, but please let's stop
the bickering.
This is a very fine line we're walking here. These lists are not to be
used as a selling platform. On the other hand, there are those who do expect
to be compensated for research or copies done for other people.
I have never charged for any lookups or copies that I've gotten for
someone, but these days it's getting more difficult to lay down laws in
black and white.
For example, getting copies of Will and Will information at our local
courthouse has gone from 10 cents a copy, to 50. I dropped over $40 one day,
and still didn't get everything copied that I wanted. So, it would not be
unreasonable to expect some compensation in a situation like that.
There are a lot of grey areas when getting into these kinds of
situations. And I must admit, my first thought when reading one post, was
that it was really bordering solicitation. Perhaps the wording could have
been different.
In the future, let us please think about what we post, and keep our
motives clear, so as not to have misunderstandings. Because the bottom line
still remains, that the list cannot be used as a means of selling services.
If compensation for time and copies is the issue, then keep the
discussion on that private, between the one offering, and the one who wants
the help. Whether it be $10 or $.10.
