On the evening of (early morning) April 27, 1865 the SULTANA, a
steamship, was returning released prisoners from Cahaba, Andersonville and
other rebel prisons to Indiana, Ohio and other states in the central
northwest. The ship designed to safely hold 380 passengers and crew was
overloaded to approximately 2200-2300 persons.

At 2 AM just north of Memphis the boiler exploded, destroying the ship,
and killing over 1700 persons.

The persons from Indiana Units have been extracted, and the data is located
here.
