I suspect it is an abbreviation for Wuerttemberg, Germany.

Subject: [INHAMILT-L] Help - Census abbreviation I can't figure out

Hi, list - while looking up my Fouch ancestors in the 1880 Indiana
Census, I have come across an abbreviation which I don't know how to
decipher. And I just know there's some wise person out there who knows:
Where/what is WERT?

The parent's birthplace is listed as WERT.

The family is Spitzmesser, so I thought it might be perhaps a German
country back then?

Thank you for your time!!

Galt, CA
