Here may be some more for you!
As CURTS is fresh on my brain & I was looking for someone else, I found
this:
New Amsterdam Cemetery, Washington Township, Harrison Co., IN
CURTS members burried there include:
Millie Caroline "Carrie Curts 6-6-1838 1-13-1917
M-1 James Curts, civil war vet buried at Potato Run Cemetery.
Carrie died when the ice covered the ground & could not be taken to
Potato Run, the family intended to move her in the spring but did not.
Henry S. Curts 1867 525-1921
Frank V. Curts 3-5-1907 7-4-1923 son of Henry & Brittie
New Amsterdam Cemetery is located east bank of Ohio River in Washington Twp,
Harrison Co., IN. Section 2 and 11 in Township 5 South, range 2 East.
It was platted & laid out Set 19, 1816 by Jacob Funk and Samuel McAdams,
part of town in Sect. 2 and situated north of Main Street was platted on
Funk's land and that part of town south of Main Street and in Section 11
was on McAdam's land.
during the days of heavy travel on the Ohio River, New Amsterdam was a
flourishing trading post and drew customers from up & down the Ohio River.
Merchants of New Amsterdam went out in boats to bring people free of charge
to their stores to trade. Large orchards were cultivated in the area. Two
distilleries were located there as well. from 1890 to 1900 the population
hit 400, the 2nd largest town in Harrison Co. during that time period.
Flooding of the Ohio River proved fatal for the town, when in 1937 nearly
all the buildings between Green St & Main St. were washed away. Various
fires took their toll, and with fading river traffic, better roads, people
took their trade elsewhere. New Amsterdam lost its high school, and due to
fire, lost its grade school building. In turn it lost its telephone
exchange & post office. Once the school burned, the property was given
over to add on to the cemetery.
Family names there include:
Wilson, Finn, Barks, Carver, beanblossom, Byerley, Curts, Mowrer, Crecelius,
Daily, Rock, Chism, Mounts, Bandy, Funk.
New Amsterdam is aprox. a 15-20 min. drive from downtown Corydon, IN via
State Hwy 135 South of Corydon.
