Looking for information on John Edwards and family.
John Edwards b. 1762 in Wales d. 18 April 1863 in Kurtz, IN m. Mary Jackson
b. abt 1770 d. 13 Jan 1846
From: "Soldiers and Patriots Buried in Indiana" Bartholomew Co. Library,
Columbus, IN
--- buried in Jackson Co., IN - JOHN EDWARDS, born 1762, enlisted 1778 at
Lancaster, PA; served to 10/1783 as Drummer, Capt. Van Swearingen & Clark's
Co., Col. David Bradhead's PA Regiment, also drummer 8th PA Regiment
John Edwards served as a drummer boy in Continental Army in the Revolutionary
War, 8 PA Regt., from June, 1778 to October, 1783.
John Edwards was an only child and was still an infant when his family
traveled to America. His father died on the voyage and he and his mother
located in Pennsylvania. His mother died when he was about 7. The courts
gave him to a family that mistreated him and the neighbors found him a new
home with a family whose name is not known. As the story goes, one day when
John was out looking after some cattle, a party of Revolutionary soldiers
came along and John went with them to Lancaster, PA where he enlisted.
Pension claim W. 8685 proves marriage to Mary Jackson. After their marriage,
they relocated to the historic fort in Boonesborough, KY where they lived
for many years and where many of their children were born. Later they moved
to Somerset, Pulaski, Co., KY.
Because the family opposed slavery, they moved on to Indiana. They located
in Jackson County near Kurtz. John and probably Mary were buried near Kurtz
in a small family cemetery on what was their farm at that time. A government
tombstone sits beside the original stone, marking John Edwards grave.
John and Mary had at least two daughters - Rachel and Rebecca who both
married Tucker's in Fulton County Arkansas.
Thank you,
Georgiana Norris
